Located in Van Nuys, California, in the historic Van Nuys Library, we represent clients in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
After decades of experience representing injured safety officers, Aaron Straussner and Julie Sherman opened Straussner Sherman in 2004. The firm’s mission was simple: help protect those individuals who have spent their careers protecting the community.
We specialize in representing California safety officers who face injury or illness while on the job. We handle workers’ compensation cases, death claims, industrial disability retirement, and third-party personal injury. Many cases are straightforward, such as making sure injured officers receive timely benefits and medical treatment. But years of experience and litigation have also equipped our attorneys with specialized knowledge of the law and policies surrounding California’s public safety agencies and retirement associations. Our attorneys are trained to advise and litigate the law specifically related to safety personnel: Labor Code 4850 benefits, presumptive injury law, department-union based alternative workers’ compensation “carve outs,” and industrial disability retirements.
Beyond representing our individual clients, we regularly advise prominent safety officer unions regarding the legal rights of their membership. In the past, our partnership with these unions has included testimony before the state legislature regarding proposed workers’ compensation law that directly benefitted those officers diagnosed with cancer and heart trouble.
Straussner Sherman Lonné Treger Helquist prides itself not only for its professional and legal services, but also for the time and financial support its attorneys give to a wide range of non-profit organizations. Our partners serve as board members of numerous non-profit organizations dedicated to the support of safety officers throughout the state and nation. We also frequently volunteer and contribute to a wide-variety of departmental and union-based events to give back to our clients and their coworkers.
We are fortunate to actively participate in both the professional and charitable work of safety officers throughout California, but we have also dedicated a portion of our practice to representing civilians who have been hurt on the job and need top-notch legal counsel. We are happy to take care of not only safety officers throughout the state, but their friends and family as well.
